Improve the public health with biotoxins standards
CIFGA is a chemical pharmaceutical company which business model is based in the profits of natural biotoxins, specifically the development of biotoxins standards for analysis and research; and the development of analytical methodology for detection and quantification of those compounds.
The know-how of CIFGA is related to the culture of producing organisms, and different extraction and purification protocols applied to them and to food/feed (used as raw material). Specific analysis are developed and carried out with different techniques of HPLC and NMR to achieve the production of the compounds of interest, which are the biotoxins that will be used as standards for controlling environmental safety, monitoring programs, seafood safety, studying new mechanisms of action and potential therapeutic uses.

The business lines developed by CIFGA are divided in 2 main groups:
• Development of valuable compounds, mainly standards for analysis and research.
• Detection of biotoxins and development of analytical methodology.
• Marine Toxins (phycotoxins)
• Freshwater Toxins (cyanotoxins)
• Analysis of biotoxins
CIFGA´s aim consists of producing biotoxins standards to meet the existing demands. Replacement of bioassays to detect biocontaminants involves a need of commercial standards. Willing to offer a complete range of products for biotoxins detection, CIFGA possess a large inventory of resources to grow microorganisms (such as algae) and then isolate, extract and purify the compounds of interest needed to improve screening strategies of food/seafood safety monitoring programs.
Collaborations include, among others:
Oceanography/fisheries/aquaculture institutions that may improve and expand the toxic material sources; companies specialized in immunological techniques that may lead to detection kits; or institutions related to synthesis of complex chemical structures to synthesize standards that are not available or are scare.
CIFGA´s production system is based on developing each standard according to ISO Guide Series 30 for Producers of Reference Materials, and in last years we have managed to increase our positioning as analytical standards producing company. Currently, CIFGA is a European reference in marine toxins standards becoming the first company in Europe able to provide certified reference materials (CRMs) of marine biotoxins, and the first company worldwide in being Accredited according to ISO Guide 34 for the specific materials of marine biotoxins. Therefore we are focusing our efforts in continuing this situation.
CIFGA has a strong commitment to Research and Development, having been granted by Regional, National and European funds. The internationalization potential of the company is clear, having reached the 5 continents over more than 25 countries. In addition, CIFGA has secured a worldwide distribution deal with LGC standards, a leading global producer and distributor of reference materials, enabling current CIFGA customers to take advantage of extensive logistics, supply and distribution capabilities.
